Down to the shannon

Musik: Tim Roderwieser
Text: Michael Fliegner, Tim Roderwieser
2005

"Der amerikanische Bürgerkrieg wird in den Geschichtsbüchern oft als “Bruderkrieg” bezeichnet.
Auch von den Ufern des Shannon sind zwei Brüder aufgebrochen,
ohne etwas vom Wahnsinn dieses Krieges zu ahnen..."

a slowly sinking sun wraps the world in a strange light
two boys 're lying at the riverbank, and they look up to the sky
they dream about a better life, what they’ll have and what they’ll do
a cut was made, a vow was spoken, what we swear is what we do

by all what to ourselves is holy, and by the golden eagle’s grace
by the family's and the tribe we're leaving to the sea we turn our face

let’s go down to the shannon, to the servant of the sea,
it will open up the world someday, like a gate for you and me
let us think about the great things, we will do when we are gone,
to a place over the ocean, where the wealthy waters run

the circle of the full moon paints flares on the dark ocean
two men standing at the upper deck and they shiver with emotion
they're wondering 'bout what to expect in this so promised holy place
not knowing 'bout two brother nations fighting face to face

by all what to ourselves is holy, and by the golden eagle’s grace
by the family's and the tribe we're leaving to the sea we turn our face

let’s go down to the shannon, to the servant of the sea,
it will open up the world someday, like a gate for you and me
let us think about the great things, we will do when we are gone,
to a place over the ocean, where the wealthy waters run

a blood drained ground, the world in tears a lost bullet finds its aim,
only one comes back to the Shannon's shores, without victory or fame

And he goes down to the shannon, who's still flowing to the sea
this time there is no turning back, not for you and not for me
all the precious years we had are gone, and they never will return
just memories in his mind are left, like eternal flames they burn
